By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept: A Novel of Forgiveness

By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept - Paulo Coelho I enjoyed this book, as I do all of Coelho's books to-date, but this one had a little bit too much religion in it for me. A good read and good plot, but the religion detracted a great deal from the book for me.

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

A Long Way Gone - Ishmael Beah A gripping biography. It's unreal what Beah experienced in Sierra Leone as a child, not to mention the many other children there... I am glad something good has come out of his experiences-- or one can hope with the way my country (or the UN) determines its wars and tragedies, it's never that simple.

The Book of Laughter and Forgetting

The Book of Laughter and Forgetting - Milan Kundera, Aaron Asher An interesting book of separate stories but a little hard to follow and not well connected. The book is definitely entertaining, however.

Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!

Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late! - Mo Willems Not as good as "Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus," but good nonetheless.

The Shadow of the Sun

The Shadow of the Sun - Ryszard Kapuściński, Klara Glowczewska "Shadow of the Sun" is an excellent account of life in Africa. Although I have not been, Kapuscinski's detail and storytelling paints a picture of the massive continent not unlike that of National Geographic's photos. The last paragraph of the book is one of the best writing I have every read. Extremely entertaining and informative-- just a tad long in the tooth.

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! - Mo Willems A fun little story that I would love to read to any child!

Warren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements: The Search for the Company with a Durable Competitive Advantage

Warren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements: The Search for the Company with a Durable Competitive Advantage - Mary Buffett, David Clark A quick, easy read about the basic principles of investing in solid, well-run companies. The book, for the most part, hits on the key points and sometimes glosses over more important points, but it is a decent guide to investing. I wish the authors had spent more time on determining the "correct" price to buy securities. They did touch on this point towards the end, but went from more basic discussion to very technical, with little explanation as to their figures. Quite honestly, I think this might have been an attempt to hide the author's lack of knowledge on Buffet's investing style or investing acumen. This book could have been better had the authors been more detailed in their discussions. It offered some insight into Buffett's way of thinking, although I think it could have done much, much more. Overall, this is a good book to read about the basic ABCs of investing.

Choke

Choke - Chuck Palahniuk A fabulously funny book about a sex addict's journey through life and his struggle with his disease and family issues. The mere fact that he works at a colonial town as a blacksmith and all of the stories derived from it are worth reading this book alone. I couldn't stop laughing during all of chapter 28-- it's simply some of the best creativity and comedy I have read/heard in very long time! Recommended for those not faint of heart, looking for a wild ride through an addict's life.

Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman

Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman - Yvon Chouinard As I am someone who thoroughly enjoys the outdoors and all that nature has to offer, this book inspired me. Although I currently do not own any Patagonia products but know of them and their products, I was very intrigued by the history of the company and found out many things that I did not know and, quite honestly, admired. For instance, I was unaware that Patagonia, which started out as Chouinard Equipment-- Mr. Chouinard noticed that El Capitan was being damaged by climber's pitons and decided to make pitons that were removable and sold them to support his climbing and surfing passions and inadvertently created what now is Patagonia-- donates 1% of their net sales per annum to non-profit organizations that support and strive for a green environment. Patagonia has also helped to purchase thousands of acres of land throughout the world so that it will forever remain as it should-- in its natural state for all to enjoy. Patagonia also supports/allows its employees to actively participate in their own beliefs and will even pay for any "fees" incurred in support of them. This book is for anyone that has the desire to change the world in a positive manner by exploring and developing their passion(s) in life. Mr. Chouinard and Patagonia is an excellent example of the power that people and companies have to make the world a better place in which to live. Highly recommended!

Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place

Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place - Terry Tempest Williams Terry Tempest Williams' words allow the reader to enter the world of the Great Salt Lake and envision all of it splendid winged creatures. Although I have never visited the Great Salt Lake, I have constructed it in my head while reading this book. It must be an awe-inspiring place. Mrs. Williams' struggle with her family's cancer draws the reader in even more; it is clear to see the passion in the author's words. And the way the author intertwines her stories on the Great Salt Lake with her family's trials and tribulations is spectacular. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in nature, someone who is dealing with loss or just has a compassion for mother nature and mankind. A very good read.

A Gift to My Children: A Father's Lessons for Life and Investing

A Gift to My Children: A Father's Lessons for Life and Investing - Jim Rogers A decent book that was designed to give advice to the author's children but uses many investment examples to get the point across. The book felt forced and many of the examples given refer to Mr. Rogers successes, rather than his failures. I am glad that I read this book, although I probably will never own it. Rogers is always informative and will always be on my must-read list.

Complete Life's Little Instruction Book: 1,560 Suggestions, Observations, and Reminders on How to Live a Happy and Rewarding Life

Complete Life's Little Instruction Book: 1,560 Suggestions, Observations, and Reminders on How to Live a Happy and Rewarding Life - H. Jackson Brown Jr. An excellent little book with great advice. A quick read worthwhile for everyone.

Bank On Yourself: The Life-Changing Secret to Protecting Your Financial Future

Bank On Yourself: The Life-Changing Secret to Protecting Your Financial Future - Pamela Yellen While the idea that the author presents is an intriguing, much unknown alternative for most Americans, this book, I believe, is very poorly written. Not from the standpoint that it doesn't convey the idea well, but it does so in such a long, drawn out manner, in which the author feels as though it is necessary to show many other's personal successes with this strategy. Perhaps I am being too hard on the author, but I really could have read this book as a 20-page pamphlet and made up my own mind as to whether it is a good strategy or not. One significant downside to the author's strategy that is not noted in the book is that it is my understanding that one is "locked in" to the U.S. Dollar, which will most likely depreciate significantly in value in the coming years. If you decide to read the book, and I would suggest that you give it a chance, only read the chapters pertinent to her strategy and how it is set up, how one earns income, etc and skip the rest.

The Ultimate Depression Survival Guide: Protect Your Savings, Boost Your Income, and Grow Wealthy Even in the Worst of Times

The Ultimate Depression Survival Guide: Protect Your Savings, Boost Your Income, and Grow Wealthy Even in the Worst of Times - Martin D. Weiss An informative book that reads quickly, although much if it, sadly, is already outdated, even though it just came out. Such is the problem of publishing a book like this during the tumultuous era we are in. The book has some good ideas, though, and the author's father, from whom the author received first hand knowledge, was very successful during the Great Depression. Unfortunately, I do not think the book successfully explains the downside of using leverage ETFs, which it advocates, especially during a longer period of time. (They actually are not advantageous over any long-term stretch of time, unless the market is going in the direction in which one is levered.) Also, it seems as though the author spends a lot of time advertising his site, which, undoubtedly, is to be expected and offers some free information. However, the site sells individual mutually exclusive products that cost 100s or 1000s of dollars, so where the author tries to state in his book that he is working for the little guy, his site, in actuality, is mostly intended for more wealthy clientele. The book is worth a read, although I would not purchase it, especially for $30. The book doesn't offer enough information, in my opinion; I will just take a few pages of notes and return it to the library.

Understanding Options

Understanding Options - Michael Sincere A very basic, straightforward book on options. While I thought the book was decent, overall, I think it was lacking more depth. The examples used in the book were repetitive and very basic. This book could have been much more than what it was. A book only for people with very little investment experience. Disappointed but a little more knowledgeable because of this book.

Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine

Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine - Glenn Beck Sadly, Glenn Beck is one of very few media personalities that is bringing attention to the dire issues facing our nation today. In speaking with many friends, Democrat, Republican & Independent, they all feel the same anxiety as Mr. Beck. Unfortunately, many in the media continue to dismiss the significance of the people and instead of asking tough questions to our officials, prefers to do the opposite. This book is well written and gives a good idea of how mainstream America is feeling today and why. It's time to take our country back from the bureaucracy!
